Course description
Duration and Level:
AS & A2 Levels: 2 years – AS in year 1, leading to A2 in year 2.
Intensive Programme: One year full-time course leading to A-level. This course is for students who have studied some A-level before.
Mode: Full time
What does the A/S/ A2 Level include?
All students taking AS Mathematics will study Core Maths C1, Core Module C2 and Statistics s1.
The Edexcel AS Mathematics syllabus is as follows:
C1 & C2 consist of Pure Maths involving algebra and functions, equations and inequalities, curve sketching, coordinate geometry, series, calculus, exponential and logarithms, trigonometry and sine and cosine rules.
S1 consists of Mathematical models in probability and statistical representation and summary of data, probability, correlation and regression, discrete random variables and the normal distribution.
How will I be assessed?
Edexcel examinations take place in May / June. In addition there will be College tests during the year, and regular reviews of student attendance, punctuality and work completion.
What does the A2 level include?
In A2, all the students will take further Pure Maths modules, C3 & C4 and the Mechanics module M1 consisting of the study of forces and motion of bodies.
What do I need to get onto the course?
To study AS you should have a minimum of grade B in GCSE Mathematics. You should also have at least 4 additional GCSE passes at minimum C grade, to include English.
Overseas applicants will be expected to pass the AS Mathematical entry test set by the College.
Applicants for the Intensive course will usually have studied the A Level previously and will be expected to pass the Intensive Maths entry test set by the College.
To study 3 AS levels, you need to have 4 other GCSEs grades A-C (obtained in one sitting).
To study 4 AS levels, you need to have 5 other GCSEs grades A-C (obtained in one sitting).
You will need to pass your AS in order to progress onto the A2 and a grade D is normally expected.
What else can I study?
Other subjects which are particularly suitable in combination with Maths include: Accounts, Chemistry, ICT, Economics, Physics, Biology, Psychology, Sociology, though it is common for students to take Mathematics in combination with any other subject.
