ObjectivesThis course is about the smaller, often overlooked, art collections in London. We visit a different collection each week, looking at the collection, its history and place within the London art scene.
Course descriptionWhat topics will we cover?
After an initial session at the City Lit, the course comprises visits to the various collections, guided tours and group discussions led by the tutor. The collections visited include: Fenton House; the Estorick Collection; the UCL art collection; the Courtauld Gallery; the Imperial War Museum; Guildhall Art Gallery; the Wallace Collection; the Gilbert Collection and Mansion House.
The course aims to help students understand the range of smaller art collections open to the public in London. It also aims to give students the knowledge and confidence to explore smaller collections independently.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
1. Understand the range of smaller art collections in London
2. Discuss art with greater confidence
3. Explore London’s smaller museums and galleries with greater confidence
What level is the course?
The course is suitable for beginners; you do not need to have studied art history before. However, it will also be suitable for students with some knowledge of the subject.
How will I be taught?
The first class is spent at Keeley Street and will include a tutor presentation, with written handouts and photocopies. The remainder of the course will consist of visits to the various collections. Where permitted, the tutor will lead a guided tour of the museum/gallery. If lecturing is not permitted, the tutor will provide a structured exercise involving looking at specific artworks and will discuss responses individually. There will be a group discussion at the end of each visit.
Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?
There will be travel costs to and from the different collections that we visit; these will all be within zones 1-2. Some of the galleries visited charge admission. Students may want to purchase books from the reading list provided at the first session.
What feedback will I get?
All students complete a ‘statement of learning’ form at the beginning and end of the course to assess their achievement. The tutor will provide informal feedback during the discussions at the exhibition. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?
