Course - Introduction to iconography and icon painting

  • Course description What is the course about?

    There will be a short explanation of the word ikon, the historical context (the Byzantine world), the origins and meanings of the icon, types and techniques in icon painting and a comparison between the icon and other religious paintings.

    What topics will we cover?


    Origins of the icon. Historical context; meanings and symbols and their explanation. Techniques in icon painting. Similarities and differences with other tendencies in art history (e.g. Egyptian art, Greek art, etc). Short analysis of a few important icons. Practical experience of icon painting.

    By the end of this course you should be able to:

    An understanding of the differences between a Byzantine icon and other religious paintings
    A brief understanding of its symbols and meanings
    Basic practical experience of icon painting

    What level is the course?

    No previous experience is required.

    How will I be taught?


    There will be a lot of images and visual materials; discussions between tutor and students; discussions between students in small groups; a collaboration between students and tutor in the practical part of painting.

    Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

    No.

    What feedback will I get?


    Your tutor will give you feedback individually and through group discussion. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
