Entry requirementsWhat background and qualifications do you need to join?Applicants must have GCSE grades A – C English. Hairdressing NVQ level one. Suitable for applicant’s aged 16 and over. Work experience and other qualifications may be considered as well as a character reference from school, college, employer or previous employer. You should also be self-motivated and want to pursue a career in the hairdressing industry. You will be asked to attend an interview before joining a course in order to show that you meet these requirements. A work placement in a salon is essential and we will require proof of this. Adequate language, literacy and numeracy skills are required and may be assessed using a Basic Skills Assessment in Literacy. All applicants are required to satisfy the course team of their suitability at interview. An interview will be arranged on receipt of your application form.
Course descriptionWhat does the course lead to?
Successful completion leads to an NVQ Level 2 qualification in hairdressing with the opportunity to gain employment as a junior stylist working in related industries such as a salons, cruise ships, hotels, department stores, hospitals, health and fitness centres or progress onto higher level courses. Some of our students have gained employment at Madame Tussauds styling the figures for exhibition, also at Gina Conway salons, George’s Salon and many others.
What does the course involve?
This course covers 9 units, which include:
* Advising and consult with clients.
* Shampoo and condition hair and scalp.
* Style, dress and finish hair using basic techniques.
* Cutting hair using basic techniques.
* Perming and neutralising hair or perm, relax and neutralise hair.
* Change hair colour using basic techniques.
* Fulfilling salon reception duties.
* Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation.
* Supporting health and safety and security in the salon.
* Key skills in I.T. Communication and Numeracy.
Students are required to wear a uniform during practical sessions once accepted on the course. Teaching methods include: Lectures, practical demonstrations, group activities, tutorials, external visit, guest speakers and other enrichment activities. Work experience is essential for at least four hours per week. You will be able to progress at your own pace.
How much should I study outside class?
This is a comprehensive course that requires a certain amount of home study for both practical and theory each week to complete the course and your portfolio of evidence. Approximately 3 hours per week.
How is the course assessed?
Assessment is continuous throughout the course. You will be encouraged to provide models for your practical assessments. There are 3 main methods of assessment:
Practical – assessment of practical skills is ongoing whilst working in the training salon. For assessments you will be required to work on paying clients.
Oral – you will be asked questions on theory knowledge, usually in a practical situation.
Written – in the form of assignments and written tests.
What books and equipment do I need?
You will need to purchase basic stationery supplies such as pens, paper, and a folder. Photocopy cards and floppy disks can be bought from the Skills Centre or Learning Resource Dept should they be required.
