This course is about exploring and interpreting the medieval churches of the East Anglian landscape. This will offer a rare insight into British, medieval building techniques, into patterns of worship and in turn into the minutia of everyday life that material culture can illuminate.
What topics will we cover?
Sessions at the City Lit will cover physical aspects of the churches such as towers, napping, arcade pillars, funeral monuments and painted screens. These will also involve discussions about patronage and the social and ritual use of the objects and structures under scrutiny. Basic visual and textual research techniques will be covered and a trip to the region will also be included since first hand study is essential.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
1. Identify the elements that make up a medieval church
2. Identify basic building materials and techniques
3. Discuss and compare the quality and detail of the above
4. Interpret and research the visual elements of an East Anglian church
5. Begin to understand how and why church buildings were used by medieval people
What level is the course?
The course is suitable for beginners; you do not need to have studied art history or architectural history before. However, it will also be suitable for students with some knowledge of the subject.
How will I be taught?
The course will involve tutor presentations, interactive discussions, student presentations and visits. The visits will include guided tours and on-site discussions of churches.
Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?
No, there are no other costs.
What feedback will I get?
All students complete a ‘statement of learning’ form at the beginning and end of the course to assess their achievement. The tutor will provide informal feedback of presentations and will be available for individual discussions if required. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?
Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You might like to try any of the other architecture courses.
