Course - Contemporary art showing in London

  • Course description What is the course about?

The first session will be on-site in room 113 at the City Lit and will set the scene for the following weeks; a programme of venues to be visited will be discussed at this time. Through discussion and handouts this session will feature the work of various contemporary artists. Throughout the programme course members will be encouraged to keep a diary of locations visited.

    What topics will we cover?

We will be looking at paintings, prints, text-based work, sculpture, installations, photography and videos work in large and small commercial galleries ranging from the Cork Street area of the West End to Bethnal Green in the East End, as well as public institutions.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

    - Examine the works of a broad range of artists in a variety of London Gallery settings
    - Differentiate between mediums used by artists in the work observed
    - have an appreciation of the processes/techniques used by a range of artists
    - discuss successful and unsuccessful outcomes in the work observed

    What level is the course?

The course is open to all.

    How will I be taught?

The course is visit-based: it will be taught by a mixture of gallery talks and group discussions.

Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

There are occasional entrance fees to some exhibitions and a suggested reading list will be issued at the first session of each course.

    What feedback will I get?

Since this is not a formal lecture course, there will be regular opportunities to discuss your progress with the tutor and you will be given the opportunity to complete a record of your achievements at the end of the course. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?

Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You might like to go on another City Lit course on 20th Century Art such as 'Modern Art 1950 to 2007'.
