Course - Conservation of books

  • Course description For complete beginners as well as those with some experience. The course includes cleaning, stain removal, deacidifying and repairing of paper, sewing, cover repair (paper, cloth and leather) and board reattachment. You are encouraged to bring items to conserve. Only basic tools are required.

    What is the course about?

    The course will provide a basic theoretical knowledge relating to paper restoration and book repair. Students will, through practical exercise, gain experience in the techniques to be able to conserve and restore their own items.

    Wk 1. Conserve a paperback book
    Wk 2. Why paper decays
    Wk 3. De-acidification
    Wk 4. Paper repair
    Wk 5. Wet lining & lamination
    Wk 6. Impurities in paper
    Wk 7. Book repair
    Wk 8. Sewing
    Wk 9. Cloth case binding
    Wk 10. Cloth case binding
    Wk 11. Working on students own work
    Wk 12. Working on students own work
    Wk 13. Working on students own work
    Wk 14. Working on students own work

    In terms 2 & 3 students will work individually on their own items, and be given practical demonstrations and workshops as new skills develop.

    By the end of this course you should be able to:

    - Have the basic skills required to restore a partially decayed document.
    - Have an understanding of why paper decays, and how to arrest it.
    - Be able to restore a cloth bound book
    - Be able to repair a print or map.

    What level is the course?

    No previous knowledge of book or paper restoration is required.

    How will I be taught?

    Each student will work on their own item (initially supplied by the tutor). Step by step instruction, demonstrations, and one-to-one practical teaching.

    Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

    Yes, you will be required to purchase some materials and basic tools, (brush, scalpel and a bone folder). These can be bought once the course has started, the tutor will give details.

    What feedback will I get?

    You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

    Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?

    Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
