Entry requirementsWho is this course for?
This course is designed for young people (16-19 years old)who are interested in developing basic woodworking and Furniture-making skills, and want to pursue a career in that field.
It is particularly aimed at students who have completed an Entry level course at City & Islington College and have more of a practical than academic interest and ability.
We are giving priority to students with learning difficulties, who have successfully completed our Skillsbase programs and shown talent and enthusiasm as well as responsible behavior in the workshop. Students who have completed an Entry or Skills base programme, and have shown the right attitude are given priority over any new applicants.
What do I need to get on the course?
Excellent Attitude and mature, responsible and safe behaviour, certified by references and NRA folder.Strong interest in woodwork and Furniture-making, and the ability and willingness to work physically hard (most of the work requires standing up all day). GCSE grades min. E in Mathematics, English and Design Technology or Art, or successful completion of an Entry level course.

Course descriptionWhat is this course about?
You will study for a range of City & Guilds Qualifications aimed at developing a wide range of woodworking skills. Assessment will be mainly practical : coursework and set tests, as well as an on-line Health & Safety exam
What will I study?
You will study for a range of City & Guilds Qualifications aimed at developing your practical skills. Assessment will be on practical work and portfolio.
The course is split into several small qualifications, each one teaching different skills in working with wood:
# Basic Woodworking Skills Level 1 (City & Guilds 6217)
# Wood Turning Level 1 (City & Guild 7722-29)
# Wood Carving Level 1 (City & Guild 7722-21)
# Cabinet-making Level 1 (City & Guild 7722-41)
# Veneering level 1 (City & Guild 7722-45)
# Marquetry level 1 (City & Guild 7722-42)
You will also study Basic Skills in Literacy and Numeracy for 4 hours per week, leading to Certificates in Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy at level 1

You can progress onto the Level 2 Woodwork & Furniture-making course or get into employment
