Course description
What is the course about?
How to construct and write letter forms, how to design finished pieces of lettering including illuminated letters using colour and gold leaf.
What topics will we cover?
An introduction to Foundational Hand, lower case then capitals using various sizes, numbers, letter, word spacing, layout, quotations. Other styles will be taught, i.e., Italic, Gothic, Uncials, Copperplate, etc. Illuminated letters beginning with the use of colour and then gold leaf. Different papers, vellum, etc. can be used.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
-Use a round hand ink pen to:
-Write in the Foundation hand
-Write in the Pointed Italic hand
-Design and produce a finished piece in both hands.
-The course emphasis is on perfect letter forms and innovative design and each student must be given the confidence to develop at their own pace and not feel pressured to produce quantity rather than quality.
What level is the course?
From complete beginners to intermediate progressing to advanced levels.
How will I be taught?
Group and individual demonstrations supported by discussions and visual references, but mainly learning by doing.
Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?
Some tools are available for purchase from the department, and advice on buying equipment will be given by the tutor during the course. Most materials can be obtained from the tutor.
What feedback will I get?
There will be weekly recording of each student which will form the baseline for their next lesson. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?
