This qualification will help you to gain employment working with children as a key worker or room leader in settings such as nurseries, crèches, pre schools and playgroups. To achieve the NVQ students must attend college either one day, or one evening a week.
What does the course lead to?
You may progress onto the NVQ CCLD Level 4 or the Foundation Degree in Early Years. You could gain employment in the following areas:
* Day care
* Crèches
* Childminding/Nanny
Schools/Pre-Schools/playgroups/ Extended school day care
* Children’s centres
* Hospitals
* Primary care
* Community based services
* Sure Start programmes
What does the course involve?
An NVQ is a vocational qualification and therefore a job or placement is an essential part of the course. To achieve the NVQ level 3 candidates must attend college one day or 2 evenings a week and a placement at least 2 days a week, or be employed in a Childcare setting. You will need to be working in an appropriate level 3 role for example as a Key Worker or Room Leader, or be supervising children for example as a childminder or nanny.
At college you will learn about all the areas of childcare that you will need to know as a level 3 childcare worker, this will include the following:
* Planning a curriculum for children from birth to 16 years
* Child development birth to 16 years
* Working with colleagues and parents
* Child protection
* Maintaining a secure and safe environment
* Planning, implementing and evaluating appropriate activities for children
* Reflecting on your practice
* Child Observations
* There is also an opportunity to gain a First Aid in Early years Certificate required by OFSTED
All of the above will be taught by your College tutor, you will also have an assessor who will assess you at your place of work. The assessor will observe you carrying out a range of activities on approximately six occasions over the course; they will assess you against the CACHE standards. It is by these assessments that you achieve your qualification.
You will be required to attend college at other times for assessment planning, help with portfolio building, assessment of other evidence and feedback sessions.
