    4 GCSE passes in academic subjects at grades A-C or the GNVQ Intermediate in Health & Social Care at merit grade or above or the BTEC First Diploma in related subjects also at a merit or above. There will also be diagnostic assessments in Literacy and Numeracy at the start of the course. Students must have a clean enhanced discloser (CRB).

  • Course description General information

    This is a work related course, which enables you to gain a level 3 academic qualification and valuable work experience within several care settings. You will be able to achieve the BTEC National Award Certificate in Health & Social Care on completion of six (6) units, The BTEC National Certificate in Health & Social Care on completion of twelve (12) units and the BTEC National Diploma in Health & Social Care on the completion of eighteen (18) units over two years. BTEC qualifications are well respected and are nationally recognised by employers and professional bodies. The Award Course is equivalent to 1 A2 Level, The Certificate equivalent to 2 A2 Levels and the Diploma course is the equivalent of three A2 Levels,

    Course content

    You will study 6, 12 or 18 modules over the course of one to two years. These include:

        * Equality, Diversity and Rights
        * Developing Effective Communication
        * Health, Safety and Security
        * Sociological Perspectives
        * Psychological Perspectives
        * Personal and Professional Development
        * Development through the Life Stages

    In addition to academic studies students will need to undertake several substantial practice placements.

    Teaching and assessment

    All assessment is based on coursework.  You will undertake a number of written assignments and will be observed delivering practical skills within the workplace, paid or voluntary care.

    Avariety of teaching  and assessment methods will be employed and these include case studies, role plays, scenarios, discussions, group and peer work, presentations, projects and assignments. You will be expected to complete one day each week on placements in care homes, nurseries and Day Centres and special Schools.  These can be arranged by the College. Assignments will link closely to placement experience.

    Progression

    The course is designed to enable you to acquire both the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the challenges of care practice in several care settings. Successful students may use the qualification to meet entry requirements for higher education, which could include Nurse Education, Degree in Social Work, Foundation Degree in Health & Social Care or a variety of other related degree courses.
