    Students must be at least 16 years of age and should have completed secondary school education, or its equivalent. Assessment in English and maths. Students should demonstrate a commitment to working in health and social care or early years. Satisfactory references will be required and selection is through interview. A clean enhanced discloser (CRB) is required.

  • Course description General information

    The BTEC Introductory Diploma provides a broad vocational introduction to students wishing to pursue a career in Health and Social Care. This course allows students to explore issues and services relating to care. It is designed to increase students' confidence and their ability to study and achieve. An Introductory Diploma is a Level One course and is mainly for students who have achieved grades D-G in their GCSEs or an entry-level qualification.

    Course content

    The qualification consists of three care units, two personal skills units and three specialist units.

    Students will study eight modules which generally comprise of core units:

        * Starting work in Health and Social Care
        * Working in Health and Social Care
        * Developing skills in Health and Social Care
        * Personal skills units: Personal effectiveness, Financial management
        * Vocational units option: Looking after children, Images of  people, Exploring local services

    The Key Skills of communication, information technology and application of numbers, will be included in the course.

    Teaching and assessment

    Throughout the course, practical work and written assignments are assessed. External assessment is a requirement for two of the units. Students will attend placement in a care setting and will be involved in deciding where the placement will be. The work placement takes place in the summer term.

    A variety of teaching methods will be used on this course and these include: projects, group work, peer group work, presentations, role plays, case studies, as well as practical displays and assignments.

    Progression

    As well as preparing students for a career in Health & Social Care and Early years, successful completion of the course at merit level may lead the student to be accepted onto the BTEC First Diploma in Health & Social Care programme or offer a progression route to the CACHE Childcare, Health and Education course.
