    You must be at least 16 and have completed secondary school education, or its equivalent. Youmust have at least one of the following: A BTEC Introductory Diploma (merit), 4 GCSEs Grades A-D in academic subjects, other related level 1 or 2 qualifications. A commitment to a career in caring is equally important and independent references are required. Numeracy and Literacy assessments are required. A clean enchanced discloser (CRB) is also required.

  • Course description General information

    A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. It introduces you to the employment areas you have chosen and provides a good basis to progress to an advanced work-related qualification. A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* - C and is normally taken as a one year, full-time course.

    Course content

    The course consists of six units - two core units:

        * Communication and Individual Rights within the Health & Social Care Sectors
        * Individual Needs within Health & Social Care Sectors

    There are four specialist units from the following list:

        * Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting
        * Cultural Diversity in Health & Social Care
        * Anatomy and Physiology for Health & Social Care
        * Human Lifespan Development
        * Creative & Therapeutic Activities in Health & Social Care
        * Health & Social Care Services
        * The Impact of Diet on Health

    Teaching and assessment

    All units are assessed by the completion of projects, assignments or presentations. Units are also graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.  You will be required to complete projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. Methods of teaching include, role plays, discussions, peer/groupwork, written and practical exercises. Youare required to attend one day per week of work experience.

    Progression

    The BTEC First Diploma prepares you for employment in: Registered care homes, Hospitals and primary care trusts, Nursing homes or Health centres.   It also provides a good grounding to progress to advance courses such as: BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in Health and Social Care. You will need to pass this course at a Merit Level to be able to progress.
