Course descriptionGeneral information
This introductory course is for students with little or no knowledge of electronics who have an interest and aptitude for practical electronics. It is meant to serve as a foundation for studying electronics at a higher level such as National Diploma. The outcome is the achievement of the First Diploma itself, which may be used as an entry for working in an environment at an elementary level. It can also serve as the entry requirement to the more advanced National Diploma in Electronics studied within the College.
Course content
The course is made up from core and specialist units.
The core units are:
* Working practices in Engineering
* Using & Interpreting Engineering Information
* Applied Science for technicians
* Applied Mathematics for Technicians.
The specialist units are:
* Electronic Devices and Communication
* Electronic Maintenance
* Circuit Construction
* Testing and Computer Aided Drawing Techniques.
There is also an essential module both for key skills in literacy, numeracy and IT and for personal tutorial sessions.
Teaching and assessment
Each module will have a series of class tests and assignments to be completed in which students must pass in order to complete the course successfully. The course us a mixture of theory and practical, active lectures, group activities and practical electronics and PC lab work.
Progression
Possible work in electronics at junior level. Entry to BTEC National Diploma in Electronics Engineering if merit grades are achieved at First Diploma level.
