What does it include?
The BTEC First Diploma in Business provides students with a broad understanding of private, public and voluntary sector businesses. Students will understand how factors such as marketing, customers, staff and competition impact on business to determine its success. Students will study the following topics:
- Introduction to Business Activities
- Exploring Key Business Pressures
- Investigating Financial Control
- Employee Contribution to Working Conditions
- Sales and Customer Service
- Starting Up a New Business
Students will also have to complete their Key Skills in Communications, Application of Number and Information Technology as well as demonstrating their ability to work with others in a team environment.
The programme of study also provides students with the opportunity to focus on a range of career options and develop their career management skills to help them succeed in their chosen vocation.
A programme of visits will be arranged for students to consolidate what has been learnt and to witness this in operation within a range of businesses. Student learning will be assessed on a continuous basis during the course through case studies, presentations, business reports and time-constrained activities.
What do I need to get on to it?
Students will be aged between 16 to 19 and have a minimum of 3 Ds at GCSE or a level one qualification e.g. GNVQ Foundation, NVQ Level 1. All students will be expected to attend an interview.
Where does it lead?
Students who gain a merit could progress onto a level 3 qualification such as a National Diploma or Applied A levels. Those students who wish to progress onto an A Level programme at City of Westminster College would require a distinction. Students would also be able to gain entry to employment at an appropriate level within a business e.g. retail assistant.
