You will normally need to have at least one of the following: a foundation GNVQ in Land & Environment or similar Level 1 course at a merit with a Level 1 key skill or appropriate GCSEs (normally at least four passes at Grade D or above, to include English, science, mathematics and a subject testing the use of English). Appropriate knowledge and/or experience gained in employment will be considered.

Course descriptionGeneral information
A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It covers the basic knowledge and technical practical skills, providing a good foundation for future career opportunities or progression to a more advanced work-related qualification. A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A-C and may be taken as a full-time course.
Course content
The course is made up of six units - 3 core units and 3 specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study a particular area in more depth.
The core units are:
* Work related experience in animal care (120 hours in the year)
* Animal care industry and organisations
* Animal accommodation, handling and care
Specialist units are:
* Introduction to animal and plant biology
* Animal health, welfare and behaviour
* Conservation and improvement of british habitats.
Teaching and assessment
All units are assessed and graded against specified criteria and then an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. Methods include: presentations, leaflets, assignments, essays, experiment write ups, posters, information sheets, question sheets, work sheets, quizzes and tests, practical observations and more. The methods employed will include; written essays, presentations, practical demonstrations, husbandry with the animals, work sheets, mini assessments and together these combine a portfolio of evidence.
Progression
A BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care can develop the skills you need to start or progress in careers, such as: Kennels, Catteries, Animal welfare charities, Wildlife charities, Zoos and animal collections, Pet shops. The qualification provides the underpinning knowledge requirements for Animal Care NVQ2. It also provides a good grounding to go on to a more advanced course such as the National Award, National Diploma or National Certificate in: Animal Management Horse Management.
