Course - Bookbinding: making a unique artist book

  • Course description What is the course about?

    Whether you are an artist or a maker or simply interested in the book form this course is designed to develop your ideas through the structure of the book culminating in a unique hand made book or small edition exploring sequence, narrative and space through the structure of the book.

    What topics will we cover?

    You will be introduced to a range of interesting book structures ranging from simple folded books through to more complex multi-sectioned books. You will develop skills in both the production and design of a hand made book enabling you to develop your individual skills and creativity and to go onto more complex and experimental bindings.

    By the end of this course you should be able to:

    • to be able to select and use appropriate materials
    • to be able to make a range of book structures
    • to have an understanding of the book structure in relation to its contents

    How will I be taught?


    Through demonstration, practical and discussion you will be taught as a group and helped individually as required. Handouts will accompany demonstrations. You will be encouraged to investigate the current and historical literature on the subject, and will be informed of publications and events which maybe of interest.

    Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

    The bindery is equipped with most tools but you will be expected to provide your own personal handtools. Nothing need be bought before starting the course. A list of equipment and suppliers will be provided at the first lesson. The class has some materials which may be bought. It is expected that you will increasingly provide your own as your experience and individual requirements and preferences, develop. Information and advice on materials and larger pieces of equipment will always be available. You should expect to spend up to £20 to provide yourself with the basic handtools.

    What feedback will I get?

    You can expect your tutor to give you feedback and guidance and at the end of the course you will be given the opportunity to complete a record of your achievements which will be verified by your tutor. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
