    A short, 20 week course covering shampooing, basic scissor and clipper cutting, trimming facial hair and hair finishing techniques for men. Suitable for students wishing to gain a certificate in Barbering skills at NVQ level 2

    What background and qualifications do you need to join?

    All applicants should have good spoken and written English, applicants under 19 must have GCSE grades A – D English and a minimum four hours work experience whilst in the course. Other qualifications may be considered as well as a reference from school, college, or employer.

    You should also be self-motivated and want to pursue a career in the hairdressing industry. You will be asked to attend an interview before joining a course in order to show that you meet these requirements. A work placement in a salon is essential and we will require proof of this. Adequate language, literacy and numeracy skills are required and may be assessed using a Basic Skills Assessment in Literacy.

    All applicants are required to satisfy the course team of their suitability at interview. An interview will be arranged on receipt of your application form.

    What does the course lead to?

    Successful completion leads to an Level 2 certificate covering 4 units in barbering with the opportunity to gain employment as a junior stylist working in related industries such as a salons, cruise ships, hotels, department stores, hospitals, health and fitness centres or progress onto higher level courses.

    What does the course involve?

        * Shampooing and conditioning hair and scalp
        * Dry hair to shape for men
        * Cutting hair using basic barbering techniques
        * Cutting facial hair to shape

    Students are required to wear a uniform during practical salon sessions Teaching methods include: Lectures, practical demonstrations, group activities, tutorials, external visit, guest speakers and other enrichment activities. Work experience is essential of at least four hours per week. You will be able to progress at your own pace. Assessment is continuous throughout the course. You will be encouraged to provide models for your practical assessments

    How much should I study outside class?


    This is a short course that requires a certain amount of home study for both practical and theory each week to complete the course and your portfolio of evidence. Approximately 2 hours per week

    How is the course assessed?

    There are 3 main methods of assessment Practical – assessment of practical skills is ongoing whilst working in the training salon. For assessments you will be required to work on paying clients. Oral – you will answer questions on theory knowledge, usually in a practical situation. Written – in the form of assignments and written tests.
