  • Course description What is the course about?

    This course is about the current practices and debates within the academic discipline of art history. It deals with at how art history is written and discussed.

    What topics will we cover?


    The course includes general introductions to two of the major critical frameworks used within current art history: postmodernism and museology. The roles and uses of these critical frameworks will be discussed with reference to major works of art on display in London collections.

    The course aims to help students understand the role of critical frameworks within the current practice of art history. Familiarity with these frameworks may enrich the experience of looking at art within a gallery or museum.

    By the end of this course you should be able to:

    1. Understand broadly several basic principles postmodernism and its use within current art history
    2. Understand broadly several basic principles of museology and its use within current art history
    3. Discuss art using a critical framework with greater confidence

    What level is the course?

    The course is not suitable for beginners. Some prior knowledge of art history is essential. The course would be useful to students preparing to study art history at degree level or above.

    How will I be taught?

    The course is divided into a morning and an afternoon session. In the morning session there will be a slide presentation by the tutor introducing postmodernism and museology. There will be time for questions and discussion at the end. In the afternoon, the students work in smaller groups discussing works of art and aspects of art history introduced by the tutor at the morning session. There will be a plenary or whole-group discussion at the end of the course.

    Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

    Students may want to purchase books from the reading list.

    What feedback will I get?


    All students complete a ‘statement of learning’ form at the beginning and end of the course to assess their achievement. The tutor will provide informal feedback during the small group activities and the class discussions. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
