Entry requirementsWhat background and qualifications do you need to join? For Level two you will need to show some examples of recent work in any media at your interview. This can be drawing, paintings, photographs, ceramics, anything that you have made or done yourself. Those with a small portfolio may be set a drawing project to be completed for term 1.

Course descriptionCourse Description
This is a general art and design course, which is specifically designed for students who wish to build a portfolio of work and progress to a Foundation course. The course is a good stepping stone for students without much or any previous experience who wish to be artists, graphic designers, fashion designers, or any other art profession,
This is a structured course over 3 days a week that focuses on the basic skills that underpin all areas of Art and Design. You will be set practical projects in life and observational drawing, colour, painting, design, three-dimensional work. Work varies from one day workshops to projects that run over three weeks. We will also visit museums and art galleries. As you begin to acquire skills you will be expected to develop a more individual way of working. Topics will be covered by specialist tutors. The qualification consist of 6 units:
* 2d and 3D Visual Communication
* Contextual References in Art & Design
* Explore and Develop Art and Design Ideas
* Produce and Art and Design Outcome
* Working to a Visual Arts Brief
* Optional unit chosen to support your particular strength or interest
Key Skills are available on Thursday afternoons and are also integrated into the course.
At the end of the course you will take part in an end of year exhibition.
For enrichment activities you may also join the other specialist areas within our art and design programme such as printmaking, photography, ceramics or sculpture.
Assessment is informal and will take place at key stages through out the course. You will have at least one personal tutorial a term when your progress will be discussed.
What does the course lead to?
Most students progress to higher level courses, in particular the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.
How much should I study outside class?
You will be required to carry out a few hours a week to gather some research work and/or materials for practical projects as and when required. There is homework during the holidays.
How is the course assessed?
Assessment will take place at key stages through out the course ending will a final assessment at the end of the course. You will have a one to one tutorial at least once a term when your progress and motivation will be discussed.
What books and equipment do I need?
You will need to buy your own equipment and materials, such as sketchbooks, brushes and paper. The college has a limited stock of paper and paint that you can buy. Easels, drawing boards, plan chests and lockers are provided.
