    How have people from different times, places and cultures understood the sacred, the holy and the supernatural? What cultural expressions have their beliefs taken, and why? This exciting new interdisciplinary MA draws upon the School's wonderful range of expertise in order to explore these questions, united by a core course remarkable for its disciplinary, geographical and chronological breadth, which considers a variety of categories that cut across this fundamental area of human experience, imagination and culture.

    Module details

    Specialist course units can be chosen from among a variety taught in the School's eight subject areas, and students are encouraged to exploit the School's range of expertise in choosing topics and supervisors for their MA dissertation. In 2005-6, specialist courses on offer included units from the following subject areas:

    -Archaeology : ( Archaeology of Religions)
    -Art History & Visual Studies ( Etruscan Italy; The Stained Glass of York Minster; The Sacred Topography of Christian Syria; Saints & Society: Art & the Sacred in Italy 1200-1500)
    -Classics & Ancient History ( Demes and democracy; The interpretation of myth)
    -English & American Studies ( Monsters and the Monstrous; Magic and Popular Belief 1200-1500)
    -History ( The Cult of the Saints in Early Medieval Europe; Society and the Supernatural in Early Modern Britain)
    -Religions & Theology ( Islamic Mystical Traditions and Texts; Jewish Art & Architecture; Readings in Theology, Culture and Society; Terror and Utopia)
