ObjectivesThe programme aims to encourage creative and flexible self-directed learning and incorporates experiential workshops, seminars and interactive sessions in addition to more formal lectures. Throughout the three years, you participate in a series of clinical case presentations, where cases are discussed in the light of theory and research in order to enable peer review of formulation and intervention plans, and to highlight theory-practice links.
Entry requirementsEntry requirements At least an upper second class honours degree in psychology recognised as conferring to the Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR) by the British Psychological Society (BPS) or a lower second class degree plus a strong performance in a relevant higher degree or equivalent and eligibility for the GBR of the BPS.

Course descriptionThe programme is based on a core competency model and comprises four main areas of teaching:
-professional practice and personal development;
-therapeutic models and interventions;
-research methods in clinical psychology;
-and client groups and clinical contexts.
-In the first year, you are introduced to cognitive-behavioural and personal construct models; in the second year, to psychodynamic, systemic and constructionist models; and in the third year, to models of your choice, including more advanced coverage of those on which you have had previous input. Modules on clinical skills, personal and professional practice, and research methods run throughout the programme. During the third year there is a set of advanced workshops that address specialist topics and contemporary issues.
Work placement
You generally undertake six placements, each of four to six months for two days per week. In your first and second year of training your placements are usually in settings working with adults, older adults, children and adolescents and people with learning disabilities to develop core competencies and experiences. In the third year, a range of placements at advanced levels and in specialist areas are available: in therapy areas such as CBT, Personal Construct Psychotherapy, Systemic Family Therapy, Psychodynamic, CAT; and in fields such as physical health, forensic, and neuropsychology.
Careers
All trainees are employed as Trainee Clinical Psychologists by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Trusts on a three-year, fixed term contract. No self-funding places are available.
Teaching methods
The programme uses both traditional and problem based learning to assist trainees in doctoral level, adult learning focused enterprise. The programme requires the trainee to acquire a wide variety of competencies in clinical, academic and research work in Clinical Psychology.
