Classical Civilisation (MA)

  • Objectives This degree develops knowledge and understanding of several disciplines in the field of classics, such as ancient history, literature, classical archaeology and philosophy. It enables you to develop your existing career, move into a new area such as the arts or education, or study for a research degree. As well as your dissertation subject you can choose two special subjects – we encourage specialisation and research in one or more of the individual disciplines that make up classics.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements A good degree in an arts subject. We will also normally consider social science and science graduates, and applicants with other qualifications.
  • Academic title Classical Civilisation (MA)
  • Course description This unique interdisciplinary degree programme offers graduates of disciplines other than classics the opportunity of studying the classical world at postgraduate level, without prior knowledge or study of Latin or Greek. Students may focus on aspects of Graeco-Roman culture between the archaic and late antique periods, and are simultaneously encouraged to work on the history and processes of the 'reception' of classical culture in the modern world.

    Year 1

    Core course: Introduction to Classical Culture. This considers the different kinds of ancient evidence and major modern debates about classical culture. All texts are taught in English translation.

    One special subject chosen from available options. In the past, options have included:

    -Athens Between History, Myth and Obsession
    -Augustan Histories
    -Other Peoples in Greek and Roman Thought
    -Approaching Death in Ancient Greece and Rome
    -Language, Power and Political Thought – Classical Traditions and Early -Medieval Transformations
    -Literature in Translation
    -Religious and Political Space in the Classical and Hellenistic World
    -Responses to Rome from the Eighteenth Century to the Present
    -The Athenian Empire.

    Year 2

    One special subject.

    Dissertation.
