This course is nationally recognised and provides stepping stones to further qualifications which link practical skills and theoretical knowledge. The course is modular and not meant to be related to a time scale, the Level 2 & Level 3 Certificates are awarded when the required number of competencies have been obtained. In addition to the NVQ qualification, students will also have to complete a vocationally relevant keyskills at level 2 and level 3 City & Guilds Progression Award - Technical Certificate. The Standards for the competencies have been set by the Lead Body for the Motor Industry - Automotive Skills Council. The qualification is awarded by the City and Guilds of London Institute for this College.
Course content
The course is structured through a series of modules. Some of the learning will be done in the form of 'learning packages' i.e. information sheets and lists of text book references for self-study, so that the subject can be studied at any time in any order.
Teaching and assessment
Evidence must be provided of ability to successfully perform a series of practical tasks throughout the course. The evidence can be collected at work, or by way of the realistic working environment at college. The teaching strategies suit a wide range of learning styles - they include ILT (Information learning technology), classroom based delivery, practical tasks, simulated I.L.T. and workshop tasks.
Progression
The successful completion of Level 3, can be followed by a Higher qualification such as an BTEC HNC/D. Having achieved the level 3 Apprenticeship, students will be classified as fully-skilled automotive technicians.
