Certificate Commercial Operation of Shipping

  • Objectives This course aims to provide you with a comprehensive and internationally regarded qualification in the many aspects of shipping, port operations and management. The award is recognised professionally by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. Business and commercial links permeate our work. We undertake commercially contracted research, consultancy and training programmes in the public, private and voluntary sectors, and have host companies, local links with professional bodies, and industrial advisors and visiting professors. These activities provide current data and case study material for use in teaching to ensure that our courses are vocationally relevant and reflect the latest trends and thinking in the industry.
  • Entry requirements Applications from mature students with a seafaring and/or shipping operational/ business background are welcome. You should have 190 points in your A levels or equivalent, including 160 points from one 12-unit award or two 6-unit awards. You should also hold at least grade C in English Language and Mathematics.

  • Course description Course structure
    You study seven modules, plus an IT support programme over the course of the year. The syllabus covers the key principles of modern maritime operations and management.

    Year 1 modules include:

    -Finance in Shipping
    -Management in Shipping
    -Shipping and Port Technology
    -Shipping Economics
    -Shipping Operations and Environment
    -The Law and Practice of Marine Insurance
    -The Law of Carriage of Goods by Sea

    Assessment
    A variety of methods are used and typically involve lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, group presentations, essays, exams, reports, case studies and industry-based assignments. Visits to ships and ports are integral to the course.

    Career opportunities
    If successful on the course you can pursue careers in ship-broking, marine insurance, shipping law, freight forwarding and logistics management. Those who successfully complete all modules at an average of 50% or above are entitled to apply for up to four exemptions from the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers prospectus. A number of past graduates have progressed to further study.
