  • Objectives The Keele MBA is designed to provide students with an integrated knowledge of the core disciplines of management and an in-depth knowledge of their chosen specialist areas combined with a comprehensive appreciation of the management task. Graduates will have greater management awareness and increased personal confidence enabling them to discuss complex problems meaningfully and coherently. They will have developed leadership, communication and interpersonal skills and have the motivation to implement change and to improve existing management practices.
  • Entry requirements All applicants should have a first degree (UK second class honours degree equivalent (2.1 or 2.2) or an equivalent professional qualification; along with at least two years’ work experience. Where English is not a first language proof of English language competence will be required (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent). Mature students without a first degree but with at least eight years’ work experience at management level will also be considered for entry.

    Introduction

    At Keele we offer a very distinctive perspective to business students: the critical approach that is neither cynical nor deferential but always questioning the conventional wisdom. We want our graduates to become independent thinkers who never simply accept what they are told or chase the mirage of the latest business fad. The Keele MBA is not only about work but also about social climate. To perform well you need a stimulating environment; an institution that has not only a physical content but also a personality. This is the largest campus in the UK with woods, lakes and a large country mansion, a friendly and safe place where warm friendships are created. Yet for the restless, London is only two hours away by train.

    Course Structure and Content

    Satisfactory completion of the MBA programme requires students to pass nine 15-credit taught modules (135 credits) plus a 60-credit dissertation, giving a total requirement of 195 M level credits.

    Students who satisfactorily complete the taught modules but not the dissertation may be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma. Of the nine taught modules six are cores modules and three are option modules providing students with the opportunity to specialise in a chosen area.

    Option modules vary from year to year but the following are a selection of possible options: Marketing Communications/Consumer Behaviour/E-Commerce/Strategy, Managers & Accountability/Quality Management/Business Ethics/Creativity in Business/Sourcing & Supply Strategy/Human Resource Management.

    For 2008, the Keele MBA hopes to introduces a new core module in Management Creativity and International Business that aims to provide our students with an opportunity to experience a different business perspective. Building on the already successful international collaboration with IM&B, our Dutch partners, it is anticipated that students will travel to Europe to study this module. It is envisaged that the Part-time cohorts will also have an opportunity to travel and study a module in Europe.

    Teaching and Assessment

    The Keele MBA provides an intensive and intellectually challenging advanced study of management combining both practical and theoretical elements. Modules are taught within a strategic and international framework with the focus of the course on action learning, group dynamics and networking amongst fellow students. Teaching is a mixture of formal lectures, or management style seminars and group work with site visits, videos and computer programmes enriching the learning experience.

    Most modules are assessed by assignment and formal examination. The final assessment is based on the submission of a 15,000-20,000 word research dissertation that is undertaken by the student in conjunction with an academic supervisor.
