Course descriptionGeneral information
This is a full time course and designed to provide a basic knowledge of various subjects relating to a range of Public Service sectors. This is a course for school leavers who want to work in the uniformed services.
You must have a commitment to develop your own personal qualities, be committed, enthusiastic, energetic and have a keen interest in developing skills and techniques that will help you improve your chances of selection and career progression within the armed forces, emergency services, police, fire service, ambulance service, security and prison services.
Course content
The course covers the following units:
* The Uniformed and Non-Uniformed Public Services Sector
* Introduction to Fitness and Lifestyle for Working in the Public Services
* Personal Effectiveness for the Public Services
* Diversity in the Public Services
* Social Responsibility and the Value of the Citizen in the Public Services
* Practical Application and Use of ICT in the Public Services
* Practical Team Working in the Public Services
* Introduction to Security Procedures in the Public Services
* Introduction to Map Work and Navigation Skills for the Public Services
Teaching and assessment
Continual assessment throughout the year and a number of assignments both written and practical. Students are required to complete a portfolio (file) containing evidence of assignments, practical performance, presentations, group exercises and discussions.
Students are given plenty of help and direction from staff and are encouraged to undertake their own research and additional reading.
Progression
On successful completion of the Introductory Diploma at Merit grade or above and subject to review, students can progress on to the BTEC First Diploma inPublic Services.
The course is a combination of theory and practical activities. To succeed on this course you will need a high level of discipline, stamina and an ability to communicate well. You should also be highly motivated, enthusiastic and a good team player.
