Course descriptionGeneral information
The BTEC Introductory Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs grade D-G and is composed of eight units: three core units, two personal skills units and three option units. Students can access the BTEC Introductory qualifications having achieved appropriate qualifications or learning at BTEC Entry level or shown an interest or aptitude in business, retail or administration (e.g. 14-16 year olds). On successful completion of the BTEC Introductory Certificate students top-up to the BTEC Introductory Diploma by undertaking the required additional units. Students can progress to Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First qualification in the same vocational area (e.g. BTEC First Diploma for IT Practitioners (Software Development) or have other options.
Course content
Learners will be required to study all three core units as well as two personal skills units and three option units.
Core Units -
* Unit 1: Starting Work in the IT Industry
* Unit 2: Working in the IT Industry
* Unit 3: Developing IT Skills
Personal skills units - two units must be studied
* Unit 5: Social Responsibility at Work
* Unit 6: Financial Management
Optional units - three units must be studied
* Unit 7: PC Systems
* Unit 8: Using the Internet
* Unit 9: IT Applications.
Teaching and assessment
All units are internally assessed and subject to external verification through National Standards Sampling (NSS). Each unit is assessed using the grading grid and grading criteria at Pass, Merit and Distinction. Please note that there is an externally-set Introductory Project covering the following units: Unit 1: Starting Work in the IT Industry and Unit 2: Working in the IT Industry. There is also an overall qualification grade calculated from the unit grades. To achieve the BTEC Introductory Certificate, all units have to be achieved at least to Pass level.
Teaching is done in a variety of methods, from teacher led classwork to individual and group work.
