    Programme

Building complex software systems which perform reliably presents great intellectual challenges, and a degree in Software Engineering is a passport into this exciting field. Established theories and modern design techniques are drawn together to develop high-quality software. We offer students the opportunity to combine analytical skills and a facility for logical thought, with creativity and flair; a powerful combination in the job market.

In the first year, students cover foundational subjects including computer programming, computer systems architecture and web-interface development. The second year introduces object-oriented analysis and design techniques, operating systems and computer networks and internet software development. In addition, rigorous methods for specifying software are developed and various implementation strategies are compared. Students spend the third year in industry and this provides the opportunity for applying what they have learnt and gaining further experience. In the final year, students undertake an individual software development project and are invited to choose from a variety of specialist subject areas within computing. A module discussing software quality, professionalism and ethics completes the final year portfolio.

Students have access to state-of-the-art software and hardware, in addition to a large network that supports a variety of industry-standard systems. Students are encouraged to use and experiment with the computing facilities from their first year and throughout their study.
