  • Objectives The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester is a world-class centre for teaching and research.   • Entry requirements Entry Requirements

    * A/AS Levels: Three A-Levels including Physics and Mathematics normally required. Two AS-Levels considered in place of third A-Level. AS-Level Mathematics or Physics (grade B) accepted for BSc if supported by strength elsewhere.
    * GCSE: No specific requirements. Mathematics may be required for Science Foundation Year.
    * Access to HE courses: Pass, with at least the requisite credits at level 3.
    * European Baccalaureate: Pass with 65% overall.
    * International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma, BSc 28 points, MPhys 34 points.
    * Leicestershire Progression Accord: BSc 250 points, MPhys 290 points, subjects as above, plus full Accord credits.
    * BTEC Nationals: Pass Diploma with DMM, plus any subject / GCSE requirements.
    * Other Qualifications: Other national and international qualifications welcomed.
    * Second Year Entry: Possible for candidates with advanced qualifications compatible with our degree structure.
    * Science Foundation: We accept students from the University Science Foundation Programme.
    * Applicants may be interviewed and all those receiving an offer will be invited to visit the Department.
    * These degrees are not available on a part-time basis.

    Programme

    First Year

    You will study core topics in physics and mathematics including atoms and quanta, light and matter and electricity and magnetism. The laboratory programme introduces a broad range of practical techniques. A wide range of option courses covers fields as diverse as nanotechnology, great experiments and particle physics and the cosmos.

    Second Year

    The core programme builds upon the first year foundations and includes relativity and particles, waves and fields, condensed matter physics and electromagnetism. Laboratory work develops to incorporate an increasing range of practical skills. Over 15 option courses cover topics such as fractals and chaos, biophysics and quantum devices.

    Third Year

    Core topics include quantum physics, atoms and nuclei, radiation and matter and plasma physics. A semester long pair project provides students with research experience in a subject of their choice. Optional material includes a range of practical workshops and over 20 option courses in subjects such as elementary particles, further relativity, magnetic systems and advanced materials. Courses on management and business skills are also offered.
