Course description
BSc Midwifery
Programme
A woman-centred curriculum is followed, comprising nine modules at academic Levels One, Two and Three. Placements are at NHS hospitals and community areas, giving students a variety of experience with opportunities to participate in innovative aspects of midwifery practice. Students are partnered with a Midwife in practice and work the same off duty which can include night duty and weekends, thus gaining a rounded understanding of total midwifery care.
Students learn how to become Midwives who work within a multi-racial society and become aware of the healthcare implications of cultural differences around pregnancy and child birth. Student Midwives are fortunate to benefit from:
* NHS bursary (means tested)
* Registration as a Midwife with the NMC
* Academic qualification of BSc(Hons)
* First year accommodation
* Hospital and community experience.
Midwifery lecturers are all registered Midwives, and have specific expertise in topics such as supervision of midwifery, third stage of labour, progress of labour, ethics, research theory and women’s issues. Some are currently undertaking research and PhD theses, and others are contributing to nationally acclaimed midwifery textbooks. Some are reviewing textbooks and contributing to journals and volunteer groups. The lecturers teach students in a university setting, in the NHS hospitals and in the community.
