BSc Medical Genetics

  • Objectives Students successfully completing the University of Leicester Science Foundation Year Programme can progress automatically to the first year of the Medical Genetics course.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements * A/AS levels: Three A2 levels, normally two in relevant sciences subjects, preferably from Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics. Two AS levels considered in place of one A2 level. General Studies is not accepted. * GCSE: English, Mathematics, and Chemistry normally required at Grade C or above if not held at A2/AS level. * Access to HE course: Pass, with at least the requisite credits at level 3. * European Baccalaureate: Pass with 70% overall. * International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 32-34 points. * Leicestershire Progression Accord: 290 points as above plus full Accord credits. * BTEC Nationals: Full Diploma with DDM (equivalent to 320 Tariff points), plus any subject / GCSE requirements. * Other Qualifications: Other national and international qualifications welcomed. * Mature students welcomed: alternative qualifications considered. * Second Year Entry: Possible for those with advanced qualifications compatible with our degree structure. * Applicants are not normally interviewed. All those receiving an offer will be invited to visit the Department. * This degree is not available on a part-time basis.

    Programme

    First Year

    There is a unique combination of modules from Medicine and Biological Sciences; The modules will introduce you to areas such as physiology, pharmacology and microbiology. Through a specialised module ‘Genes in Medicine’ you will learn how genetics is applied to Medicine.

    Second and Final Years

    You will learn how the techniques of modern genetics are being used to investigate human disease and the structure and function of the human genome. Development of an awareness of the social and ethical implications of recent advances in genetics is also a major objective. In addition to the core modules of human and medical genetics you will have the opportunity to extend your studies in a chosen area such as cancer research, pharmacology or microbiology.

    Project work in the final year provides opportunities to interact with scientists in an academic or a medical laboratory - an exciting introduction to scientific research. Final year students are encouraged to become involved in departmental activities by attending discussion sessions and seminars by visiting scientists. You may also choose to become a student member of the Genetical Society of Great Britain.
