BSc Mathematics and Economics

  • Objectives BSc Mathematics and Economics provides a broad education in mathematics, and substantial degree level studies in economics. The course is aimed at mathematically-minded people, probably seeking to enter the business or financial sector upon graduating, for example as management consultants, actuaries, accountants or business analysts. No previous knowledge of economics or management/ business studies is assumed.

    Programme

    Year one

    Two thirds of the first year is devoted to mathematics. Students study Core Mathematics with modules in Analytical and Computational Foundations, Calculus and Linear Mathematics, as well as modules in Probability and Statistics.

    For Economics, the remaining third of the first year is comprised of two modules from the School of Economics in both Micro- and Macroeconomics. For Management Studies, the remaining third of the first year is comprised of four modules from the Business School: Entrepreneurship and Business, Business Economics, People and Organisations and Contemporary Economic Policy.

    Year two

    Half of the year is devoted to mathematics, consisting of two compulsory modules in statistics and probability and four optional modules chosen from a large selection. The other half of the year for Economics consists of Economics modules chosen from several options and for Management Studies consists of four compulsory Business School modules and two options from a wide selection.

    Year three

    As for year two, your time is equally divided between both disciplines with all mathematics modules being optional. For Economics, modules are chosen from a wide range of options and for Management Studies, there are four compulsory modules and two options offered by the Business School.
