BSc Human Biology

  • Objectives Human Biology offers the opportunity to study the structure and functions of your own body. It provides a sound education in modern biology and helps develop the personal skills necessary for a successful career in a variety of professions. It addresses such vital questions as 'How do genes determine the capabilities of individuals?' or 'To what extent do genes determine our nature?' In Year 2 you will consider the causative factors in human disease. Modules such as Physiological Control Mechanisms will provide an insight into the sophisticated and intricate workings of the normal healthy human. In the final year you will continue the themes of health and disease and choose two further modules, depending on your personal interests or career aspirations. A feature of the final year particularly enjoyed by students is a major supervised research project. The optional work placement year offers you the opportunity to work in hospitals, multinational companies or world famous research laboratories. Recent placements have included research work with Astra Zeneca, Pfizer, SmithKlineBeecham and Syngenta. Six Huddersfield biology students have contributed to the work of The Sanger Centre, Cambridge on the Human Genome Project.
