    Programme

    1st year overview

Modules in year one are designed to increase students’ knowledge, skills and understanding in exercise and health physiology, nutrition and psychology. The practical based module, ‘Applied Practice in Health and Exercise’ provides an opportunity for students to attain a recognised fitness industry level two award. The context of health and physical activity is examined through a sociological, historical, and international perspective. Fundamental practical skills in health screening, fitness testing and assessment of body composition are introduced in conjunction with a theoretical underpinning.

    2nd year overview

Year two critically examines the role of physical activity in disease prevention, health promotion and policy development. Modules in both ‘Healthy Weight Management’ and ‘Individual Exercise Programming’ address real issues that are designed to provide students with a head start when seeking employment. An interdisciplinary approach to ‘Health and Fitness for Specific Populations’ is adopted which includes pregnancy, children and the elderly. An optional module in year two allows students to study the practical considerations of ‘Managing a Small Business’. Modules at both Diploma and Honours Levels also require students to work with external clients to conceptualise, deliver and reflect upon individualised exercise programmes.

    3rd year overview

Students upon completion of their third year will be level two and three accredited by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS). This, combined with a BSc (Hons) is particularly attractive to prospective employers in the health and fitness industry.
