Programme
-Year 1 introduces you to key aspects of animal biology and microbiology, as well as fundamental principles of biochemistry, cell biology and genetics. It considers human physiology, and investigates how human form relates to human function as the body ages. It also looks at the features of plants which allow them to grow, survive and adapt within both natural and man-made environments.
-Year 2 explores the development of the theory of evolution from Darwin, through its subsequent refinements due to other scientific developments, to the modern synthetic theory. It investigates how animals, microorganisms and plants adapt to environmental extremes, and examines how the structure of protein relates to its function.
-In Year 3, you can undertake a work placement or progress directly to your final year which looks at gene manipulation, explores plant biotechnology, and assesses the central role played by fungi in biotechnology and molecular biology. It examines abnormal development of organisms due to genetic and environmental disturbance, and explores the positive application of many biotechnological processes in society. You also have ample opportunity to complete a thorough piece of scientific research.
