  • Course description Course description
This programme is for you if you want a broad biological course that sets bioscience in its historical, social and ethical context. It is especially suitable for students who have taken either mixed Arts/Science A levels, or one of the new AS levels in Public Engagement with Science, and who wish to maintain a broadly based education. The programme offers a wide spectrum of training in the biological sciences from staff who are specialists in their chosen subject areas. The study of science and society is taught by specialist staff from the faculty Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine. Through lectures, seminars and projects, you will study the changing social, ethical and political relations of modern science. Courses cover topics from the issues around genetic engineering up to global environmental issues. Final year students undertake a project that provides an in depth study of a topic of historical and contemporary importance in the biosciences. As well as equipping students for a career in Biology, the degree also prepares graduates for future employment in communication, administrative and management roles in science, by teaching transferable reading, research, writing, analytical and presentational skills.

    Career opportunities
Bioscience graduates from the University of Manchester go into a variety of careers. About half stay in the life sciences and related disciplines, choosing either to study further research or taught courses such as a Masters or PhD, which could lead onto a career in bioscience, or medicine/dentistry degrees. A significant number go on to complete a science teaching qualification, such as a secondary science PGCE. This innovative programme also equips students with the necessary skills to enter science communication or museum work. Those that choose a career outside of the life sciences are highly sought after by large multinationals. Graduate programmes in accountancy, finance, law, marketing and publishing are particularly popular choices for graduates from the Faculty who do not wish to stay in science.

Course fees: For entry in 2008 are £3,145 per annum for home/EU students and £12,900 per annum for international students.
