  • Academic title BSc Audiology
  • Course description Audiology is the name given to a body of knowledge, including its practical application, in the areas of hearing, balance and deafness.

The programme consists of professional and clinical training in addition to academic study. Successful completion of clinical and academic components leads to state registration as an audiologist. The programme provides four years full-time study, with Year 3 in two full-time work placements in audiology clinical service settings. Block clinical placements of a shorter duration also take place in Years 1, 2 and 4. Clinical placements and the supervision that supports the placements is organized in partnership with service providers in the North West regions.

    Audiology in Manchester
The BSc in Audiology at Manchester started in September 2002 and was one of the first to be commissioned in the UK. It is led by members of the Audiology and Deafness group. This group has considerable experience of delivering training in this area, and has been running an MSc in Audiology and a BSc in Speech and Language Therapy for over 25 years. The BSc in Audiology is accredited by the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists and the British Academy of Audiology and the group is at the forefront of developments in audiology.

It is leading the evaluation of the new national newborn hearing screening programme; the training for the modernisation of paediatric audiology services and the introduction of digital signal processing hearing aids. Members of the team have a number of research grants to carry out research in a wide variety of audiological, speech and language therapy and deaf education areas.

    Special features
Year 3 students are employed full-time as training-grade Audiologists in the NHS.

    Accrediting organisations
The course is accredited by the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP), the British Academy of Audiology (BAA) and the Hearing Aid Council (HAC).

    Associated organisations
British Academy of Audiology and British Society of Audiology.

    Career opportunities
Audiology professionals are mainly based in health services, particularly in the NHS. The need for expansion in training of audiology professionals is urgent due to recent initiatives by the Department of Health in modernising hearing aid services and in introducing a national programme of newborn hearing screening.

There is a current shortage of audiologists to work in the NHS in both clinical and research areas. The job prospects in audiology, both in the NHS and private sector, are likely to remain very good.

Other career opportunities include research in universities or research institutes, private sector audiology services, and (with further training) related health care careers. Unlike most other BSc degrees in the UK, graduates from the Manchester course are eligible to register with the Hearing Aid Council (enabling work in private hearing aid dispensing) without further examinations.

For people with an appropriate first degree other than audiology, there is also an opportunity for entry to the profession via MSc/Diploma audiology.

    Course fees:

Fees for entry in 2009 to be confirmed. Fees for entry in 2008 were paid in full by the NHS for home/EU students. A training salary in the region of £9,000 will also be paid for the 'year 3' work placement. The course is not open to international students.
