BSc Applied Ecology and Conservation

  • Objectives The programme offers the opportunity to acquire the varied skills required of applied ecologists and conservation biologists through a combination of taught modules and practical experience. The first year of the degree provides a broad introduction to pure and applied ecology. This provides an insight into the full range of pure and applied ecology, and how ecological perspectives can inform real-world problems in conservation and pest management, especially in relation to the agricultural landscape. The second year builds on this introduction, providing deeper insights into the ecological systems and organisms that make up our world, with an emphasis on UK issues. The final year allows for a wide range of choices, so that your degree will reflect the interests you have developed through the course. Final year project choice depends on the interests of students and staff. Recent projects taken with staff working in this area include topics as diverse as 'the ecology of parasitic wasps', 'aphid-predator interactions', 'bird foraging behaviour' and 'glow-worm conservation'.
  • Entry requirements There are different entry qualifications for each programme. Some programmes require you to have a certain amount of knowledge in a subject before you begin the degree programme – this is called a ‘subject requirement’. Other programmes do not have any specific subject requirements. All programmes will, however, expect you to have reached a certain standard in your education and will ask you to achieve certain grades in your examinations. Most programmes have a standard offer so that you know in advance what you are likely to need. Please note that even if you have the minimum entry qualifications, you are not necessarily guaranteed a place on the degree programme.
