  • Academic title BSc Accounting
  • Course description Special features
There is a high demand for this programme and so entry requirements are correspondingly high. You will be taught by staff who are leading researchers in their fields, some of whom are also qualified accountants. The programme includes an optional (but not guaranteed) work placement year with a firm of accountants and provides substantial exemptions from the examinations of the main UK professional accountancy bodies. In particular, the programme has strong links with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

    Module details
The course focus is on Accounting and Finance. Other relevant subjects, for example, Management, Law, Mathematics, Statistics and Economics are also covered. There is some scope for you to study related subjects to broaden your knowledge of the area of business and management, subject to the requirements of professional accreditation. You will receive a strong theoretical and practical grounding in the principles of Accounting and acquire appropriate transferable skills.

    Course content for year 1
In the first year you will take modules designed to introduce you to the foundations of accounting and finance. To ensure that you have a good understanding of the fundamental principles and issues that affect accounting you will also study other modules in mathematics, statistics, economics, introduction to English law, computing applications and a career skills course. Your remaining modules will be chosen from a range of options, for example in management.

    Course content for year 2
In your second year you will take further compulsory accounting and finance modules, plus a business law module, which will build on your first year studies and provide the prerequisites for the final year of study. You will also take a specialist module designed to provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for the internship year. You will then have a choice from further accounting, economics or management modules, which may depend on the requirements of professional accreditation.

    Course content for year 3
Those successfully opting for the internship year will spend an academic year working at a firm of accountants before returning to Manchester for the final year.  Those who do not choose an internship year will proceed straight to their final year of study (see ` Final Year' below).

    Course content for year 4
In your final year of study you will take a compulsory case study module, which will give those who take the internship year an opportunity to consolidate and apply what they have learned to an individual project. Those who have not taken up an internship year will be offered an alternative case study module. There is also a second module of business law, and a taxation module. Your remaining modules will then be chosen from a range of accounting, finance, economics or management courses, again depending on the requirements of professional accreditation.

    Accrediting organisations
