  • Academic title BEng Mechatronic Engineering
  • Course description Course description
The modern car is a good example of the integration of electronics into traditionally mechanical systems. In the 1970s, the electrical components in a car were limited to lights, ignition system and windscreen wipers. A modern production car features an engine management computer, ABS braking system, satellite navigation system, anti-collision radar, a Controller Area Network (CAN) data network and over twenty electric drives. Automatic driving systems are also scheduled to appear in various countries between 2015 and 2050.

'Mechatronics' blends control systems, actuators, sensors, mechanisms, power supplies and a human-machine interface into one design. The Mechatronic Engineering programme will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to analyse and design complex electro-mechanical systems, based on a foundation of electronics. Typical areas in which graduates from this programme could contribute expertise include: automation, avionics, automotive engineering and electric vehicles.

There is a common first year and the opportunity to transfer between the programmes offered by the School
