Objectives* There is still a shortage of well qualified young engineers in British industry * Students are exposed to industry standard software such as ProEngineer, MatLab and Algor FEA Analysis * Students have wide access to our numerous IT/computer and experimental laboratory facilities throughout the programme * Emphasis on real world engineering activity is strong in both group and individual projects * The Engineering Division is housed in a modern innovative building close to the city centre * Mechanical engineering is vital to all aspects of our everyday lives. It is concerned with the design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of just about anything that has movable parts. This could be jet engines, racing cars or wind turbines. For society this means that mechanical engineers are using their wide range of skills to improve the way we live.
Entry requirementsEntry requirements * Normally 240 UCAS Tariff points from a minimum of two subjects at Advanced Level (or equivalent) * * Normally five GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent), including English and Maths However, we are also keen to talk to mature students (21+) who have relevant industry experience and/or relevant training but who do not meet the above formal qualifications. * BTEC Diploma/Certificate, Advanced VCE(s), Advanced GNVQ, Scottish Higher and Irish Leaving Certificate.

Programme
After developing a sound base in the necessary fundamentals of engineering in the first year you will focus on your chosen specialist area in years two and three. Further in-depth study of the essential technical subjects will enhance the important analytical, experimental and design skills needed by engineers.
Final year modules will extend specialist knowledge but also give the opportunity to research and apply that knowledge to challenging engineering situations. At all stages the important key skills necessary to operate successfully in modern industry are promoted and developed throughout the course.
Students have the option of undertaking a year in industry immediately following completion of the year two studies. The placement offers a valuable first-hand experience of the working environment in which students can choose their initial career choice.
