Objectives
Civil engineers are, first and foremost, the creators of our environment: delivering our buildings and bridges, roads and tunnels, airports and harbours. They apply their talents to provide effective solutions to human needs: places to live, work and play, facilities for the provision of clean water, power, and the means of travel. Many projects in these areas are multidisciplinary, with civil engineers in leading roles. Our course aims to educate you for such a career by providing experience of several important disciplines. In addition to technical skills, civil engineers have to display inventiveness, be outstanding communicators and able managers. We therefore seek to help you develop these qualities through, for example, design projects and fieldwork.

Entry requirements
General university admissions requirements
All applicants must possess a minimum level of competence in English Language and in Mathematics or a Science. A pass at Grade C or above in GCSE English Language and in Mathematics or a Science, or an equivalent qualification, fulfils this requirement.
For some courses, requirements are above this University minimum, so you should check the relevant course-specific entry requirements in our hard copy prospectus which you can order online or browse on our online directory. We usually ask for candidates to show a broad base of study at GCSE level (or equivalent) with passes in at least five subjects from a range of disciplines.

BEng Civil Engineering

Civil engineers are vital to our future national infrastructure and services, and these accredited courses will give you a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of civil engineering, including design, sustainability and safety. You will benefit from teaching founded on cutting-edge research, and will learn through theory and practical work.
There are regular individual and group projects tackling industrial challenges. These may include reverse engineering a bridge, creating an effective wave energy device or helping Severn Trent to improve reservoir design. You can also take part in field courses, including geotechnical engineering work in Wales and an optional trip to Africa in the summer to improve the wellbeing of villagers by installing water turbines to generate electricity. Visits to construction sites and lectures from experts in industry provide insights into the latest civil engineering practices.
You will develop a multidisciplinary approach to solving engineering problems, alongside skills in project management, communication and leadership, and confidence to implement new technologies and optimise existing ones, equipping you for work across many industrial sectors.
Your first two years build a solid foundation of understanding in core areas before you explore more specialist areas later in the course. You will undertake civil design projects in each year and you can choose from optional modules including forensic engineering and aesthetics of design.
The majority of fourth-year modules are optional and are focused on our latest research in areas such as advanced structural engineering. You can choose to study an elective in business management or sustainability, which can be reflected in your degree title.
