ObjectivesGreece and Turkey are situated at the cultural crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Traditionally, the relationship between the two countries has been viewed as one fraught by political tensions and antagonism. Such a perspective, however, does not do justice to the extensive cultural encounters that have taken place between the two peoples over time. These encounters can be traced back to the legacy of the Greek-speaking empire of Byzantium and the multilingual empire of the Ottoman Turks that succeeded it.
