Course description
BA Surface Design
Programme
Year 1 Focuses on understanding the use of line, colour and tone in the development of surface pattern design onto a range of substrates. Assignments dovetail with workshops in screen printing, printmaking, visual studies and computeraided design. Cultural and historical studies provide a theoretical framework for visual research underpinned by a programme of personal and professional development.
Year 2 Will expand your design and production vocabulary with integrated assignments and external briefs in ceramic decoration, textile design and works on paper. You will also choose from a range of electives and engage in work placements with contemporary surface design companies. A study abroad programme funded by the European Union could provide you with the opportunity to spend a semester at one of our partner institutions in France, Holland, Germany, Sweden or Denmark.
Year 3 Will focus on how you apply your design and production knowledge and creative skills to a selection of ambitious personal projects designed to develop individuality and professionalism. Your dissertation or reflective journal will involve an extended critical submission for cultural and historical studies. The final part of the year will be devoted to your major project, allowing you to specialize in the surface design areas of your choice - and provideyou with an exhibition portfolio for your degree show.
