ObjectivesThis highly successful course develops students' creativity and provides them with the skills and flexibility to obtain employment in a wide range of areas. The course covers the key areas of surface pattern and design for fashion and interiors and is supported through the Department's close relationships with industry and commerce. Sponsored projects, work placements and bursaries help to support your studies and put them in the broader context of today's global market place. Work placements are normally available in the UK and overseas, or you could take advantage of the Department's growing network of exchanges with overseas universities and study in Europe as part of your placement year. All of these exciting opportunities can give you a competitive edge in the job market.
Entry requirementsEntry Requirements Additional requirements for this course are normally one of the following: Successful completion of a Foundation course in Art and Design. A minimum of 240 points gained in A levels including two 6-unit (A2) Awards. A minimum of 200 points gained in Advanced Vocational Certificate in Education Double Awards (AVCE). An EdExcel/BTEC National Diploma, with merits in a relevant subject.

Course descriptionCourse Structure
The course focuses on developing your skills in surface design with support from visual research, business and management and an understanding of how the end product is made. The first year provides the opportunity to explore the areas of printed textiles, embroidery and CAD. As well as these main areas of study, there will be opportunities to work in the areas of wall covering, floor covering and laminate surfaces. These design and practical studies are supported by contextual and business studies. During your second year there is a collaborative project undertaken with Fashion and Interior Design students. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in projects sponsored by industry and to take part in an overseas cultural visit. Following your optional placement year, the final year culminates in a major project, which will enable you to produce a collection of designs for display, based on your specialist area of study. Throughout your course, market research will be an important element to enable you to appreciate the requirements of customers and consumers.
