Entry requirementsSelected entry requirements English language: Candidates must be proficient in the English language, which is the language of instruction and examination at the university. Average score of 6.5 in IETLS, CPE grade C, CAE, Grade B A level: Grades BBB including Spanish. AS level: Two AS-Levels may be accepted in place of the third A-Level. Unit grade information: The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit grade information which, like all other available information, will inform the consideration of applications. Unit grades will not normally form part of offer conditions, except for Mathematics programmes. GCSE: English Language at grade C or above. Key Skills qualification: The University warmly welcomes applications from students studying the Key Skills qualification. However, as the opportunities to take these modules are not open to all applicants, currently this is not an essential requirement of the University. Course descriptionCourse description BA (Hons) Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies is a Single Hons course which gives you a thorough grounding in the languages and cultures of the Portuguese and Spanish speaking worlds. Both Spanish and Portuguese are available as individual subject areas which can be studied alongside another subject in a Joint Hons course.
Single Hons Spanish
Single Hons Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies is a four year course with the third year being spent abroad under approved conditions in a country where your languages of study are spoken. The course immerses you in Spanish language and Hispanic culture whilst introducing you to Portuguese language and culture which you can choose to study in more depth after your first year. It also provides in-depth knowledge on Latin America and the opportunity to learn Catalan.

Course collaborators
Spanish can also be studied as part of a Joint Hons course in combination with another subject. This covers the language and culture of Spain and the Hispanic world and also focuses on aspects of the other subject you choose.
Again, the third year is spent abroad under approved conditions. If you choose a Joint Hons Modern Languages course, this time can be divided equally between two countries where your target languages are spoken or spent in just one of them.
Special features BA (Hons) Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies has a highly distinctive approach to language provision. Modern language courses are taught by native speakers and as a result, both your written and your oral work are enhanced by constant exposure to accurate language.
Course content for year 1
In the first year of your course, you are trained in the modern spoken and written language through a compulsory core course and you will also select further optional units from a wide ranging selection. You will also have the chance to choose a free course module from any area of the Faculty of Humanities.
Course content for year 2
In your second year, as in your first year, you take a compulsory language course and have the opportunity to select other courses from those made available. You can also study a second language in more depth (Portuguese or Catalan) from beginner's level.

Your third year of study is spent abroad under approved conditions.

In your final year you again study a core language course, and you now have the opportunity to choose from a very wide range of more specialised optional courses.
Career opportunities
Languages qualify you for a wide range of employment. Your high-level language skills will open up numerous paths with an international dimension (e.g. business, industry and finance). You will also have excellent all-round communication skills making you a strong contender for openings in the media, PR and similar areas.
In our experience, many graduates go straight into business services, marketing, advertising, management, banking or communications. Others opt for postgraduate study or further vocational training to become accountants, lawyers, teachers (in England or abroad) or enter the Civil Service.
