ObjectivesThe study of culture does not fall neatly within disciplinary boundaries: has women's civil status really changed. What is the significance of new patterns of religious affiliation. Is the tabloid press just entertainment or a serious political force. Attempts to answer these important questions draw on knowledge from sociology, social theory, philosophy, history, linguistics and politics. Based in the social sciences, the course encourages you to learn from other disciplines and subject areas to gain a better understanding of contemporary culture.

Year one
In the first year, you study aspects of sociology and cultural studies through a series of case studies covering topics such as consumerism, popular culture, globalisation and the city. In addition, you take introductory modules in Quantitative Analysis and Social Theory. In tutorials, you explore significant traditions and influences in your discipline.
Year two
Year two will develop your understanding of the theoretical and methodological foundations of your subject and encourage you to explore these through core modules on the sociology of culture and news media. There is also a choice of optional modules for more specialised study.
Year three
Year three provides the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge through researching for and writing a dissertation. Core modules will address questions of language and culture, and also issues relating to identity in a globalising world. Again, there is a choice of options for specialised study.
