Course description
BA Russian Studies
Programme
Year one
All students take language modules. Beginners in Russian or Serbian/Croatian have special introductory modules which take you to approximately A level and give you a good grasp of the spoken language. Students who already know Russian take more advanced modules. You also take introductory modules on culture, history, cinema and literature. Modules can also be taken in other Departments. You will take part in a special subsidised course in Russia or a Serbian/Croatian-speaking area in the first summer vacation.
Year two
The second year consolidates your language study in preparation for the year abroad and offers further broad coverage of the subject. You can also start to learn another Slavonic language (Serbian/Croatian, Slovene, Polish or Russian, as appropriate).
Year three
Spent in Russia, studying at a university or language school, with further opportunities for travel and volunteer work; if you are learning a second Slavonic language, there is also an opportunity to spend a short time in that area.
Year four
In the last year, you apply your languages in high-level modules, including employment-related ones. You also apply the skills and knowledge acquired earlier in the course to specialised modules on topics in which you have become particularly interested. We have a wide range of options, taught by experts in the field. There are also optional fast-track modules for learning Serbian/Croatian and Slovene.
