Objectives
The dual subject degree in Russian and Politics is a four year course which provides the opportunity to study a wide range of theories related to contemporary issues, political theory, and the discipline of political studies, alongside the language, society, literature, visual art and thought of Russia. Our students gain a range of personal transferable skills, including communication and presentation skills, working in groups, writing reports and essays, gathering information and planning projects. Through the course at Sheffield and the Year Abroad in Russia, students can attain a high standard in speaking, writing, reading and understanding Russian. This is complemented by the study of modern Russian society, culture and history. Russian courses at Sheffield focus on small-group teaching. You'll be taught by internationally-renowned experts in our field and by native speakers of the language. All students follow either a beginners or an advanced (post-A Level) Russian course, depending on their qualifications. They also follow a core programme of modules in Russian cultural and social history that complements language instruction at each level. In addition, you may also choose from an exciting range of optional modules, including Russian thought, Soviet politics and culture, literature, art and visual culture, East European cinema, linguistics, and other Slavonic languages (Czech or Polish). All students of Modern languages at Sheffield normally spend a full academic year abroad as a course requirement. You will spend your third year abroad in Russia. At level one, dual honours Russian and Politics students take courses in the Department of Politics including Introduction to Political Analysis and Comparing Modern Polities, alongside modules in the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies designed to give you a grounding in Russian and Slavonic languages, culture, history and society. At levels two and three you deepen your subject knowledge by taking further core and optional modules and a project module.
